- - - - - The Republic of Singapore - - - - -

Human Name: Russell Lee Sang Stamford (Modern)
---------------- [OR] Tan Lee Sang (Traditional)

Official Name: The Republic of Singapore (English)
----------------- Republik Singapura (Malay)
----------------- 新加坡共和国 (Mandarin)
----------------- சிங்கப்பூர் குடியரசு (Tamil)

Personality:
Appears blank-faced (akin to Hong Kong, save for a slight smile that he wears at times) until you engage him in conversation that he finds interesting, where he animates himself significantly.

Has a "siege mentality"- believing that everyone is constantly trying to attack him- although he does not show this outwardly, it's usually a nagging thought at the back of his head. This causes him to be constantly thinking of ways to avoid exposing any sort of vulnerabilities of his (which he believes is just about everything).

Worries easily, simply due to the fact that he wishes to help out anyone that seems to be in need- (for example, sending troops out for aid, although apart of the non-aligned movement); it is a way of asserting his independence. (Also a way of assuring that those he helped will most likely not turn on him later.) It stems from his slight abandonment complex- Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Portugal, Netherlands, France, England and Japan have all expressed interest in him at some point, but have subsequently dropped him, leaving him as "a little red dot that nobody wanted". As such, he doesn't like to depend on anyone- which leaves him scared of developing more long-term relationships that are not purely economic or business-like.

He finds it difficult to express his interest in things that are more "girl-like", or appear too "soft-hearted", (considered a sign of weakness- surprising considering how he appears to worry and loves food, cooking, and shopping) and he compensates by becoming harsher when such topics come up, or blows them off entirely if the opportunity arises.

Follows "Asian values": hierarchy and familial beliefs are important to him. Thus, related "shameful" things tend to make him flustered, where he becomes quite unlike his usual self. (He tries to combat this to the best of his ability, however.)

Prefers to covertly deal with things than deal with them in the open; he also does not believe that he is as strict on certain subjects as everyone says he is. Durians make him exceedingly happy. He secretly enjoys the urban scene very much.

Relationships:
SIBLINGS:
Malaysia and Indonesia are his "siblings" in a sense, although not really fully "blood" related. They act much more like neighbours. Ties have been strained with them for ages, and only recently did they sit down to try and work on their relations... although they really still do secretly hate each other’s guts. Most of the time. (In Singapore's case, this would be more so directed to Malaysia than anything, for he's more likely to go on a tirade about Malaysia over anyone else... they way they interact is really, really complicated.)

OTHERS:
"Honorary big brother" England: With England, he really is not as close to him as he used to be, specifically due to the "worst British military loss" in WW2... that being Singapore's capitulation. That, and the shift from imperial colony to commonwealth nation had some effect on that separation, as well. This is a factor that caused Singapore's relations with America [both culturally and militarily] to have begun to develop a tad more towards him instead of England.

"Honorary" China"-gege": Singapore and China seem to have pretty much always had good relations. Even nowadays, the influence China has had on Singapore is enormous. (For example, 35% of the population speaks Mandarin as their main language.) So... yeah. They're close. 8'D

"Honorary little brother" Brunei: A nation of sorts that Singapore seemed to have taken under his wing, in a sense. The two share interchangeable currencies, and have really close navies.

The other 3 "Asian Tigers" (Taiwan, S.Korea and Hong Kong): Singapore and these 3 are actually not that close at all, even though they belong together in the group of Asian financial powerhouses. Hong Kong and Singapore have been long standing rivals (due to similar histories and purposes), Singapore had actually ceased relations with Taiwan at one point after his recognizing of the People's Republic of China (China) and the controversy coming with it, and South Korea and Singapore simply have average relations.

History:
Singapore is a melting pot of mainly Chinese, British, Malay, Indian cultures, and a crossroad for various ethnic and racial groups. He is one of the biggest and busiest ports in the world. He is also one of the Four Asian Tigers, and a world leading international financial centre.

Singapore was ruled by Malaya for many centuries, until the British arrived and set up a port colony in 1819. The End of World War two marked Singapore's start as an independent republic, described as only "partly free" in terms of politics due to some authoritarian tendencies.

Singapore has one of the strictest, yet most effective, punishment systems in South Asia. Capital punishment is legal, and Singapore has the highest execution rate per capita in the world. However, even from colonial times, racial and religious harmony have been the top priority of the governing institutions.

Singapore has been described as "a relentlessly G-rated experience, micromanaged by a state that has the look and feel of a very large corporation", and "Disneyland with the Death Penalty". Military service is also mandatory in Singapore.
